I was litigating a lengthy civil rights case in Detroit. I’ve always had some issues with back pain. But I always attributed it to the countless hours in the law library researching case law.

But this was different. The pain was more chronic.

The stress of my job had become unbearable. I was also in the middle of a child custody battle and a heated divorce. The case I was litigating was taking a lot more time than we expected and I was getting pressure from the partners to close it out.

The pain started weeks earlier in my lower back. Eventually, it moved across my shoulders. As the pain worked its way around my neck, the first of many migraine headaches began to take over my life.


The pain was so bad I had to go home. I couldn’t function. Who am I kidding? I couldn’t even think straight the pain was so bad.

And then POP! Something seriously bad happened in my back and I couldn’t move.


The pain cut into me like a hot knife. My body wouldn’t move. Who am I kidding... my body couldn’t move. It was like my lizard brain, the oldest part of our brain, took control of me and said,

“Listen Via...If you try to move, you’ll never move again...EVER.”

So I waited... motionless - no, frozen with tears in my eyes - until the paramedics arrived.

I was immediately admitted to the hospital. After testing and observation, I hadn’t responded to any conservative treatment. I was scheduled for emergency lower back surgery of the L5-S1.

My hospital stay was almost 5 weeks. And recovery took many months after that. Even after surgery and physical therapy, there was still pain in my lower back.

I continued to practice law for a few years after that, but began to look for alternative, unconventional ways to address my lower back pain. I researched natural methodologies and tested different approaches on myself and other people with similar problems.

Finally, after many years, I discovered a unique approach to helping people (and myself) move easy and pain free.

I love to move. I couldn’t imagine NOT moving.

The emergency back surgery helped at the beginning. But the pain returned.

I had to find a solution. I needed to find a solution.

I decided to research every possible modality of treatment which could help me to move the way I used to without the pain.

My research took decades. Some things worked better than others and I took note. I shared my research with people who shared similar problems.

Over time, these people became my students and in some ways my ‘willing’ test subjects.


I discovered movement can help. But not all movement.

Along the way I continued to study everything I could about movement.
